The List – SFI Fall movie screenings

MBDTOBE EC017The Sonoma Film Institute historically showcases a variety of films and documentaries each year and the line-up for this fall is no different. With international features and rarely shown classic cinema screening on the schedule, there is a little something for everyone.

All screenings take place in Warren Auditorium, Ives Hall on the Sonoma State University campus. Admission for each show is $5-$7 and free for SSU students. There is a $5 parking fee on campus.

TAKING MY PARENTS TO BURNING MAN – (Bryant ‘Spry Bry’ Boesen and Joel McCarthy, 2014) Winner of the Audience Award for Best Feature Documentary at the Sonoma International Film Festival. Friday, Aug 22 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Aug 24 at 4 p.m.

MANAKAMANA – (Stephanie Spray and Pacho Velez, 2013, in Nepali w/English subtitles) High above a jungle in Nepal, a cable car carries villagers to an ancient mountaintop temple. Friday, Aug 29 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Aug 31 at 4 p.m.

BURNING BUSH – (Agnieszka Holland, 2013, in Czech w/English subtitles) The story of the political intrigue and fight for freedom in communist Czechoslovakia following Soviet crackdown after the ‘Prague Spring’ of 1968. Friday, Sep 5 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Sep 7 at 4 p.m. (Parts 1 and 2). Friday, Sep 12 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Sep 14 at 4 p.m. (Part 3)

IL SORPASSO – (Dino Risi, 1962, in Italian w/Engish subtitles) Vittorio Gassman and Jean-Lous Trintignant star in this unforgettable road comedy. Friday, Sep 19 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Sep 21 at 4 p.m.

LOLA – (Jacques Demy, 1961, in French w/English subtitles) Magical debut feature with Anouk Aimée. Friday, Sep 26 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Sep 28 at 4 p.m.

BAY OF ANGELS – (Jacques Demy, 1963, in French w/English subtitles.) Compulsive gambler Jeanne Moreau zeros in on a naive young bank clerk in this sun-drenched, nicotine-stained ode to the gamblers and losers of the French Riviera. Friday, Oct 3 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Oct 5 at 4 p.m.

AGNES VARDA: FROM HERE TO THERE – (Agnès Varda, 2012) The masterful follow up to THE BEACHES OF AGNES, is a five part documentary series that chronicles the indefatigable filmmaker’s travels around the world, meeting friends, artists and filmmakers for an expansive view of the global contemporary art scene. Friday, Oct 10 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Oct 12 at 4 p.m. (Parts 1, 2 and 3). Friday, Oct 17 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Oct 19 at 4 p.m. (Parts 4 and 5)

SIDDHARTH – (Richie Mehta, 2013, in Hindi w/English subtitles) Spellbinding and gorgeously wrought tale of one father’s journey across India in search of his son. Friday, Oct 24 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Oct 26 at 4 p.m.

JEALOUSY – (Philippe Garrel, 2013, in French w/English subtitles) A theater actor is torn between two women. Friday, Oct 31 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Nov 2 at 4 p.m.

MANUSCRIPTS DON’T BURN – (Mohammad Rasoulof, 2013, in Farsi w/English subtitles) Gripping Iranian political thriller. Friday, Nov 14 at 4 p.m. and Sunday, Nov 16 at 4 p.m.

THE AMAZING CATFISH – (Claudia Sainte-Luce, 2013, in Spanish w/English subtitles) Sainte-Luce’s debut feature is a heartfelt family tale. Friday, Nov 21 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Nov 23 at 4 p.m.
