Local All Stars take home the championship
After winning the Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament on Saturday, the Rohnert Park Cal Ripken 9u All Stars ended their season with an incredible run.
The local NorCal team easily rolled through the first few days of competition before finally being challenged by Elk Grove in the championship game on Saturday, July 27 in Riverton, Utah. Elk Grove had beaten the Rohnert Park squad weeks before in the NorCal Tournament that sent both teams to the Southwest Regional’s.
It was a thrilling week for the local boys who hit their stride in this tournament. They played the late game on the first day, Monday, July 22, and overwhelmed host Riverton 12-0. The following day they beat the Scottsdale team 9-7 before unloading Wednesday on the Nevada team with a 23-13 victory. Not letting up one bit, the Rohnert Park team faced Southern Utah on Thursday and beat them 7-2.
Heading into the championship rounds with full steam, the boys handily beat the Central California team 13-2 on Friday, July 26 before moving onto face the Scottsdale, Arizona team on Saturday morning. Unlike the previous meeting, this one was a bit more lopsided with the Rohnert Park All Stars winning 20-2 setting up a rematch from a few weeks back with the Elk Grove Club.
They were down 2 runs to 4 heading into the top of the sixth, and last, inning. A solid rally and 4 runs later left the local club with a 6-4 lead heading into the bottom of the inning. Elk Grove did not go quietly, loading the bases, but with two outs a pop-fly to shortstop Elijah Stevenson sealed the win.
“Unfortunately at this age group this was the end of their season,” said Kacee O’Daniel, a parent of one of the local sluggers. Kids participating in the 10u and up leagues are the ones who then move from regional tournaments to a “world series tournament”.
“But the boys all started football practice today so they got to move right into something else,” she added.
