Unity Week kicks off today at Rancho Cotate High School

Unity Week has quickly become a tradition at Rancho Cotate High School as an opportunity to celebrate diversity while fostering togetherness. Unity Week first started back in 1995 and has continued each year. This year is the fourth that is being run by the Associated Student Body.

“The theme for Unity Week is pretty simple, to break culture barriers and unite our school,” said Hayley Dougan who is the ASB publicity commissioner.

Since taking over the event in 2009, the ASB has focused on creating a program by the students, for the students, to highlight cultures and issues they find interesting and wish to learn more about.

The entire week is filled with programs from speakers to musical entertainment. By spreading out the various activities over each day and the week, students have enough time to process everything they see and hear.

One of the highlights for Monday is a keynote speech to the entire school by Darrick Smith, the Center Director for LearningWorks and an award winner for violence prevention and multicultural activism.

Monday, Feb. 11 also includes the Japanese American Citizens League speaking about the history of Asian prejudice, a hands-on activity to show what it’s like to be mentally disabled, Alan Brenner will speak about blindness, and a Mariachi band will perform during lunch.

The schedule continues with fire dancing, a presentation on sign language, Cha Cha lessons, music from Los Guachies, a Native American story teller, Chinese Acrobats, Yoga lessons, Buddhist Nun speaking about her culture, the BSU Stepping Group from SSU talking about Black History, and quite a bit more. The event finishes with a rally on Friday for the entire school to reflect on the entire event.
