Boys and Girls Club Youths of the Year
This month six local kids were recognized for their achievements in the areas of academic success, the arts, character & leadership, health & life skills, and fitness & recreation. These are all core areas that the Boys and Girls Clubs stress as important aspects of their program.
For 2013 the overall Youth of the Year for the Rohnert Park Club was Merrietta Jaensch, 12, a seventh grade student at Lawrence Jones Middle School. Members selected as the individual Youth of the Year in the core areas were Keegen Jones, 8, Monte Vista, Academic Success; Alyssa Reep, 7, Monte Vista, The Arts; Kyra Reep, 8, Monte Vista, Character & Leadership; Aalyah Blackstone, 8, John Reed, Health & Life Skills; and Braeden Jones, 9, Monte Vista, Sports, Fitness & Recreation.
The winners of the award were voted on from all of the Youth of the Month recipients for 2012. The awards were handed out in a special presentation earlier this month. Sally Tomatoes provided the salads at the awards and Mark Pippin of Innovative Screenprinting provided each member with a Youth of the Month t-shirt and a Youth of the Year sweatshirt for the overall winners.
The overall Youth of the Year receives a trophy and is eligible to compete in state, regional and national competitions. State winners each receive a $1,000 scholarship and participate in regional competitions. Five regional winners each receive a $10,000 scholarship and compete on the national level. The National Youth of the Year receives up to an additional $50,000 scholarship and is installed by the President of the United States.
