Kindergarten registration time

Tuesday, January 8th, 2013 | Posted by

With school registration starting Wednesday, Jan. 9, some parents might feel a bit pressured to get the ball rolling for their little ones in preparation for the upcoming school year. Often there are many parents at their neighborhood school on the first day, getting a registration packet, and then rushing home to fill it out.

The process can be a bit overwhelming because there is a lot to understand and absorb, but the good news is that there is plenty of time.

Registration packets are available at the local elementary school office or you can download a packet in either English or Spanish from the district website under the Kindergarten Registration section.

New to the district last year and continuing this year, enrollment is open to any school, not just the one in your immediate neighborhood. The deadline for priority placement is April 2.

Later this month, the district will host its second annual Kindergarten Fair from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31. Parents are encouraged to come and learn more about the kindergarten programs within the district, such as the year-round program at Evergreen Elementary. The fair will take place at the district offices, 7165 Burton Ave.

To learn more about the individual elementary schools, you can visit them for a tour or do a side-by-side comparison using the website GreatSchools.org. Tours are scheduled by each elementary school and are a great way to meet the principal, observe classes and obtain a better understanding of the teaching philosophy. Currently only Evergreen Elementary has scheduled tours: at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25; 9 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13; 9 a.m. Thursday, March 7; and 9 a.m., Friday, April 5.

For information on tours at Marguerite Hahn, Monte Vista, Thomas Page Academy or John Reed Elementary, please contact the school’s office.

As for completing the information packet and turning it into the school, it does not matter when you turn it in. Typically the staff will talk to parents and go over the information packet to review concerns, requirements and answer questions. Taking the time to connect with parents in the initial meeting more important than how quickly the forms are returned.

Selecting a kindergarten can be time consuming, but it is time well spent to ensure the happiness and success of your child. For questions about enrollment, contact district Enrollment Liaison Jenny Wellman at 792-4708 or jenny_wellman@crpusd.org.
