EDITOR: When I read news stories about smart growth, green building and

sustainable business, I wonder how much is real and how much is rhetoric. The

best way to find out is to perform a simple calculation: measure the

greenhouse gas. If growth, buildings and businesses reduce emissions then they

merit the terms smart, green and sustainable. If not, they are just hot air.

To keep the world from turning to toast, ask about the gas.
