Senior Walkabouters seek adventure

Friday, November 9th, 2012 | Posted by

The Senior Walkabouters Intermediate Hiking and Adventure Group is a Rohnert Park-based Meetup group of 155 members in the 50+ age range. If you’re interested in hiking around Sonoma County and getting to know others of like mind, you can join Meetup online, where you can post or respond to invitations to walk.

The Senior Walkabouters hike during the day or night. Evening walks are usually 2-3 miles, but after walking for several months the group moved from a beginner’s to an intermediate hiking group, so they ask that members be able to walk four miles “without complaining.”

“NO WHINERS allowed,” the Meetup group explicitly states. “We are a fun bunch of people and don’t want to be brought down by negativity.”

They also request that walkabouters don’t wear heavy perfumes or aftershaves, or smoke around the group. Their walks start on time: be there, or be left behind!

As far as adventures go, the group wants to expand to doing other fun and physical activities like  golfing, kayaking, zip-lining and dancing.

Here are two hikes for the 3-day weekend ahead:

Afternoon hike at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10. This 4-5 mile loop at Annadel State Park starts at the Vietnam Vets trailhead off of Carissa. Trip is dependent on weather. Check back Saturday morning to see if it’s canceled.

Holiday hike at noon Monday, Nov. 12, at Mt Tamalpais State Park. This easy 4.3- mile loop to West Point Inn and back has fantastic views south. Carpooling is advised, leaving at 11 a.m.
