SSU athletes feed the needy
Sonoma State University’s athletic department has a goal of collecting 500 cans of food this week to donate to a local food pantry.
To help reach the goal, fans bringing canned food to a Seawolves’ athletic event from Feb. 22 through Feb. 25 will be admitted for the youth price of $2.
Canned food week games follow:
Feb. 24: Women’s basketball vs. UC San Diego, 5:30 p.m.
Feb. 24: Men’s basketball vs UC San Diego, 7:30 p.m.
Feb. 25: Water polo vs. Cal State Bakersfield, 10 a.m.
Feb. 25: Baseball vs. Cal State East Bay, 11 a.m.
The donated food will be given to the group Neighbors Organized Against Hunger (NOAH). The organization will distribute the food to families in Rohnert Park, Cotati and Penngrove.
Last year, SSU collected 350 cans, second among all California Collegiate Athletic Association schools. The local athletes made 500 their goal for this week.
“This (the annual CCAA food drive) allows each school to reach out to their own community and make a difference,” said women’s basketball player Aly Conway. “It also brings great awareness, not only to student-athletes, but the campus as a whole that there are hungry people in our community.
“We look forward to continuing the strong relationship we built with NOAH last year.”
