The Week: Pumpkins, ‘Passione’ and getting acquainted
A pumpkin carving contest for teens will be held from 3:30 to 4: 30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the public library in Rohnert Park, 6250 Lynne Conde Way. Contestants, ages 12 and older, will have one hour to clean and carve their pumpkin before their creations are photographed. Throughout the week, library users will vote for their favorite pumpkin. Pumpkins and carving tools will be provided by the Friends of the Rohnert Park-Cotati Library.
The Sonoma Film Institute at Sonoma State University is presenting a multimedia presentation on Friday, Oct. 21 when “Passione” – John Turturro’s ode to the music and people of Naples – is screened at 8 p.m. after Tenor Michael Van Why and Accordionist Sheri Mignano of Due Zighi Baci (Two Gypsy Kisses) perform in a special pre-film concert of Italian music at 7 p.m. in Warren Auditorium in Ives Hall. Tickets cost $10 for seniors and general admission, $8 for students, and $6 for SFI members and children. Advance tickets can be purchased at brownpapertickets.com/event/198400. Along with advance ticket purchase, Brixx Pizzeria in Cotati, 8204 Old Redwood Highway, is offering 10 percent off the cost of a meal prior to the film when you show your ticket to your server at the restaurant.
Enjoy live music performed by De Colores – The Music of the Americas, starting at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the public library in Rohnert Park, 6250 Lynne Conde Way. There will be mariachi, corridos, traditional folk and popular songs performed. Presented in English and Spanish, guests are invited to learn the history and meaning of the music played.
The Rip City Riders will host a “get acquainted” lunch run open to the public on Saturday, Oct. 22. Weather permitting, motorcycle riders will leave at 10 a.m. from Mack’s Bar and Grill, 10056 Main St. in Penngrove, and make their way to Richmond Park Bar and Grill in Kelseyville. Rohnert Park’s Resurrection Roller Girls and the Santa Rosa Rugby Club invite the public to wear a Halloween costume, enjoy live music, dancing, contests, raffle prizes and more fun at the “Pants Off, Dance Off” event on Saturday, Oct. 22, from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Arlene Francis Center, 99 West Sixth St. in Santa Rosa.
