Rohnert Park Team Wins Sno*Ball Softball Challenge in South Lake Tahoe
Rohnert Park’s JB Mechanical, one of 14 teams representing the Redwood Empire, captured the men’s division of the 29th annual March of Dimes Sno*Ball Softball Challenge in South Lake Tahoe on Jan. 29-30.
JB Mechanical, captained by Lee Montenegro, defeated Santa Rosa-based WSC (captained by Chops Sieker) in the championship game of the 24-team men’s division.
The co-ed bracket drew 67 teams to the mountains for the slow-pitch tournament, which of course, was played in the snow. Tournament officials said more teams traveled up from the Empire than any other area.
Each batter got to see one pitch, thrown by a player from their team.
The first day snow was plentiful and the temperature got up to the low 50s. That night, six inches of fresh snow fell, making it a real snow fest for the players.
Three other area men’s teams competed: Santa Rosa Outlaws, Team Dry Creek (Healdsburg) and Blue Ballz (Petaluma).
Five of the Empire co-ed teams came from Santa Rosa: Bohica, Mr. Pickle’s Sandwich Shop, Mad Company, Hail to the Hooligans and Jus’ 4 Fun. Rohnert Park was represented by Sno Fear and Jr. Bucks while Sonoma’s Rwr! and Petaluma’s Sno-Job also competed.
The co-ed division was won by www.theeventhelpers.com of Grass Valley. Woodland’s Nafziger Construction finished second.
The event is annually held the weekend before the Super Bowl and March of Dimes organizers are shooting for 100 teams for next year’s 30th renewal.
